How to read the label for tree nut allergy sufferers

Avoid foods containing nuts or any of the following ingredients;

Almonds

Artificial nuts

Beechnut

Brazil nuts

Butternut

Cashews

Chestnuts

Chinquapin

Coconut

Filberts/hazelnuts

Gianduja - a chocolate & nut paste

Ginkgo nut

Hickory nuts

Litchi/lichee/lychee nut

Macadamia nuts

Marzipan/almond paste

Nangai nuts

Natural nut extract

Nut butters

Nut meal

Nut paste

Nut pieces

Nutmeat

Pecans

Pesto

Pili nuts

Pine nuts- sometimes called; Indian, pignoli, pignolia, pignon, pinon,  & pinyon nuts

Pistachios

Praline

Shea nut

Walnuts

Likely to be found in:

Baklava and all Greek & Arabic desserts

Breads, biscuits, cakes & baked goods

Chocolate/confectionery

Marzipan

Vegetarians dishes 

Ready meals

Bear in mind;

Mortadella may contain pistachio

Many experts advise patients allergic to tree nuts to avoid peanuts too

Note: 

Nutmeg, coconut & chufa (tiger) nuts are NOT classified as 'tree nuts' and do not cause anaphylactic reactions. Pine nuts are actually seeds, however, these can cause reactions in tree nut allergy sufferers.
